Trip highlights
Day-to-day itinerary
Welcome to Argentina! Today you arrive in Buenos Aires, the vibrant capital of Argentina and one of the most characterful cities in South America. Upon arrival at the airport, you will be met and transferred to your hotel.
If you arrive in the morning, you can use the rest of the day to unwind from your journey or begin exploring Buenos Aires. For example, take a leisurely stroll around your hotel's neighborhood and settle onto a terrace for a coffee or a glass of fine wine.
Buenos Aires is renowned for its diverse neighborhoods, each boasting a distinct personality. In San Telmo and La Boca, you will encounter the authentic Argentine passion for tango right in the streets, often accompanied by live musicians playing the traditional bandoneón. Elegant Palermo is beloved for its leafy parks, boutiques, cafes, and outstanding restaurants. In the historic center, you'll discover highlights such as the Plaza de Mayo, the Casa Rosada presidential palace, and the impressive National Congress.
Buenos Aires is also celebrated for having one of the highest numbers of bookshops per capita in the world. An absolute must-visit is El Ateneo Grand Splendid, a former grand theater transformed into a breathtaking bookstore. Where performers once graced the stage, you can now browse the shelves or admire the magnificent architecture over a cup of coffee.
In the evening, you can immerse yourself in one of Argentina's true culinary highlights: dining at a traditional parrilla, where you can savor an exceptional, world-class Argentine steak.
What better way to experience Buenos Aires than by bicycle, accompanied by an expert local guide who has lived in the city for years and knows the capital inside out?
During this approximately four-hour bike tour, you will discover the highlights of Buenos Aires' historic southern districts. Pedal through colorful La Boca, where tango remains woven into daily street life, and explore historic San Telmo, one of the city's most atmospheric neighborhoods.
The route also includes Plaza de Mayo, the historic heart of Buenos Aires, featuring the Metropolitan Cathedral and the iconic Casa Rosada. You will then continue to modern Puerto Madero, where restored historic brick warehouses blend seamlessly with striking contemporary architecture.
Thanks to the small-group setting and your guide's deep insider knowledge, you will not only see the famous sights but also experience Buenos Aires as it is truly lived.
Today you journey onwards to Puerto Madryn, set on the shores of the Golfo Nuevo in Patagonia. Upon arrival, you will be transferred to your hotel, with the rest of the day at your leisure.
Puerto Madryn serves as the ideal gateway to Península Valdés, one of Argentina's premier wildlife sanctuaries. The region is famed for its remarkable abundance of marine and coastal life, offering opportunities—depending on the season—to spot southern right whales, sea lions, elephant seals, and Magellanic penguins.
You can also enjoy a relaxing stroll along Puerto Madryn's charming waterfront. Along Boulevard Almirante Brown, you'll find a variety of restaurants, cafes, and terraces offering scenic views across the bay.
Today brings an unforgettable full-day excursion to Península Valdés, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the finest destinations in Argentina for close-up wildlife encounters.
This roughly 500-kilometer coastline is a vital habitat for elephant seals, sea lions, Magellanic penguins, and countless seabirds. Inland, the peninsula's arid terrain reveals the quintessential Patagonian steppe, home to wild guanacos and rheas.
A key highlight of today's adventure is a visit to Estancia San Lorenzo, a traditional sheep ranch that now hosts one of the largest Magellanic penguin colonies in South America. During the peak season, hundreds of thousands of penguins nest here.
During a guided 1.5-hour walk, you will explore the landscape surrounding the colony. The trail begins at a coastal sand dune, where you will encounter fossils and archaeological traces that shed light on the rich natural history of this unique terrain.
Continuing across the dunes, you will spot the first Magellanic penguins among the coastal scrub and sands. As you approach the heart of the colony, you will find yourself surrounded by thousands of birds—an extraordinary opportunity to witness wildlife thriving undisturbed in its natural habitat.
Following the walk and lunch, you continue to Punta Norte, one of the premier locations on Península Valdés for observing sea lions and, with a bit of luck, orcas. Orcas are most frequently sighted here starting in December.
On the return journey to Puerto Madryn, you will stop at a small interpretive center to gain deeper insight into the remarkable flora and fauna of Península Valdés.
Optional: during the whale-watching season (approximately July through late November), you can add a boat excursion from Puerto Pirámides to witness the magnificent southern right whales up close.
Today you have a relaxed morning and afternoon to explore Puerto Pirámides and its surroundings at your own pace.
You might choose to wander along the beach, rent a mountain bike, or simply soak in the pristine coastal wilderness. A visit to the Puerto Pirámides sea lion colony (Lobería) is highly recommended, offering sweeping views across the bay and the chance to watch sea lions basking on the rocks.
Puerto Pirámides is also an inviting spot to enjoy a relaxed seafood lunch. Around 3:00 PM, you will be transferred back to your hotel in Puerto Madryn.
Whale watching by boat
Depending on the season and weather conditions, you can take a boat excursion today to observe southern right whales (Ballena Franca Austral) up close. Venturing out into the bay, this remarkable journey offers the privilege of encountering these gentle giants in their natural marine environment.
An unforgettable wildlife encounter that makes any visit to Península Valdés truly complete.
Today you fly south to El Calafate, nestled in southern Patagonia along the shores of the vast Lago Argentino.
Upon arrival, you will be transferred to your hotel. The remainder of the day is yours to spend as you wish.
El Calafate is the primary hub for exploring the southern sector of Los Glaciares National Park and the starting point for witnessing one of the world's most spectacular natural wonders: the Perito Moreno Glacier.
Spend the afternoon strolling through the town center, browsing local artisan shops, or savoring Patagonian culinary specialties at one of the cozy local restaurants.
Today promises one of the absolute pinnacles of your Argentine journey: an excursion to the awe-inspiring Perito Moreno Glacier.
Extending approximately 30 kilometers from the Southern Patagonian Ice Field, this colossal glacier descends into the turquoise waters of Lago Argentino. Its imposing terminal ice wall towers dozens of meters above the lake, creating an unforgettable spectacle.
A well-designed network of wooden walkways on the Magallanes Peninsula allows you to admire the glacier from multiple viewpoints and perspectives, placing you within just a few hundred meters of the ice face. Listen closely: the deep, rumbling groan of shifting ice is frequently followed by the thunderous crash of massive icebergs calving into the lake below.
Today also includes an approximately one-hour boat safari across Lago Rico. Viewing Perito Moreno from the water provides an entirely different, humbling perspective as you navigate past floating blue icebergs that have calved from the glacier.
A remarkable moment for nature lovers and photographers: from the water, you will experience the sheer scale of the immense ice wall in all its glory.
Today, you will cross the border into Chile and drive your rental car toward the spectacular Torres del Paine National Park.
You will first travel along a stretch of the famous Ruta 40 before continuing via other roads toward the Chilean border. In La Esperanza, you can refuel one last time before carrying on toward Cancha Carrera and the border crossing into Chile.
Once across the border, you will soon enter the national park. The landscape is constantly changing, featuring imposing peaks, glaciers, turquoise lakes, and expansive Patagonian plains.
Torres del Paine is among South America's most stunning wilderness areas, renowned for its iconic granite towers and the Cuernos del Paine. Along the way, you may also encounter guanacos, rheas, flamingos, and condors.
Today, you have ample time to explore the breathtaking Torres del Paine National Park at your own pace.
You can drive through the park in your rental car, stopping at various viewpoints along the way. A wonderful option is the area around Lago Pehoé, where you can hike to the Salto Grande waterfall and enjoy a viewpoint overlooking the Cuernos del Paine.
For the more active and adventurous, you can opt for one of the park's celebrated treks, such as the hike to the Base of the Towers (Base Torres). This is a demanding trek, but it rewards you with spectacular views of the iconic granite spires.
Other possibilities include a boat excursion on Lago Grey toward the Grey Glacier or a horseback riding trek through the park. Naturally, you can also choose to take things easy today and simply soak in the awe-inspiring wilderness.
Today, you have another full day at your disposal to continue exploring Torres del Paine.
Depending on your energy and interests, a variety of hikes await. For seasoned hikers, sections of the legendary W Trek are within reach, including the trek to the Base Torres or the French Valley.
If you prefer a gentler pace, there are plenty of shorter walks and viewpoints. Consider, for example, the Cuernos viewpoint, Mirador Cóndor, the shores of Lago Grey, or the Ferrier viewpoint.
Today offers you complete freedom to tailor your day to the weather, your energy, and your personal preferences.
After breakfast, you will depart Torres del Paine via one of the national park exits.
You will drive toward Cerro Castillo, located near the Chile-Argentina border. After crossing back into Argentina, you will continue your journey through the vast Patagonian plains toward El Calafate. Depending on your chosen route, you will drive on a mix of paved and gravel roads.
You will arrive in El Calafate by the end of the day.
Today, you will fly from El Calafate to Salta, in northwestern Argentina.
Upon arrival, you will be met and transferred to your hotel. Salta is renowned for its charming colonial architecture, vibrant culture, and dramatic setting at the foot of the Andes.
The historic center is centered around Plaza 9 de Julio, framed by handsome churches, museums, and colonial edifices. Thanks to a low-rise skyline, Salta exudes a relaxed, intimate atmosphere.
Over the coming days, Salta will serve as your gateway to a completely different world of deep gorges, multicolored mountains, cactus-studded landscapes, high-altitude Andean villages, and exceptional wine regions.
Today, you have ample time to discover Salta at your own pace.
A great place to start is Plaza 9 de Julio, the beating heart of the city. Relax in the square or from one of the surrounding café terraces to watch daily life unfold. Salteños gather here to share mate, play music, or simply enjoy the pleasant climate.
A visit to the Museum of High Altitude Archaeology (MAAM) is unmissable. The museum is dedicated to the famous Children of Llullaillaco: three exceptionally well-preserved Inca mummies sacrificed at high altitude centuries ago.
In the afternoon, you can visit Cerro San Bernardo, which can be reached either on foot or via the cable car. At the summit, you will be rewarded with sweeping panoramic views over Salta and the surrounding mountains.
Today, you will embark on one of the most scenic drives of your journey through northwestern Argentina.
Leaving Salta behind, you will wind your way up through the dramatic Quebrada de Escoipe toward the Cuesta del Obispo. The road climbs through an increasingly rugged landscape, reaching an altitude of over 3,700 meters.
From the higher elevations, you can savor expansive views over the valley you have just traversed. You will then descend toward Los Cardones National Park, where thousands of characteristic cardón cacti define the terrain, with some specimens standing six to eight meters tall.
Today, you will journey further through the stunning Calchaquí Valley toward Molinos.
En route, you will follow the Camino de los Artesanos (the Artisan Route), which runs largely parallel to Ruta 40. This is a wonderful itinerary for lovers of traditional Argentine craftsmanship. In intimate ateliers and workshops, you can see how authentic ponchos, woven textiles, and other handcrafted goods are created.
Take time along the way to stop in Seclantás, an authentic and atmospheric village well worth a visit. Then, continue the final stretch of around 20 kilometers to Molinos, a historic colonial village founded in 1659.
Wander the tranquil streets lined with simple colonial houses and visit the historic church. Hacienda de Molinos is also a delightful spot to explore and enjoy lunch.
Wine connoisseurs can take this opportunity to visit Bodega Colomé, about a 30-minute drive from Molinos. Perched at nearly 2,700 meters above sea level, these are among the highest vineyards in the world. Please note that visits and tastings must be reserved in advance.
For adventurous travelers, an excursion to the Cueva de Acsibi makes for an extraordinary addition. Accompanied by a local guide, you will hike approximately 10 kilometers through a remote wilderness of striking rock formations.
Along the way, you will discover archaeological remains and ancient rock paintings. The trail culminates in an extraordinary natural amphitheater in the rocks, where overhead sunlight filters through to illuminate the vivid colors of the canyon walls.
Due to its secluded location, very few travelers venture here—making this excursion ideal for those seeking to discover Argentina off the beaten track.
Today, you will continue your self-drive through the Calchaquí Valley toward Cafayate.
The journey takes you through dramatic, ever-changing scenery of polychrome mountains, deep gorges, and small rural settlements. A true highlight along the route is the Quebrada de las Flechas, a remarkable geological formation of sharp, jagged rock spires rising dramatically from the landscape.
Take your time to visit quaint villages along the way, stopping at a local church or a traditional weaving workshop.
Toward the end of the day, you will arrive in Cafayate, one of Northwest Argentina's most charming towns and a premier destination for wine enthusiasts.
Nestled in the heart of the Calchaquí Valley and surrounded by vineyards, Cafayate combines graceful colonial architecture, an easygoing ambiance, and world-class wines, making it an exquisite place to unwind for a few days.
Today, you can explore Cafayate at your own leisure.
The compact centre is ideal for a stroll or bike ride. Around the central square, you will find a variety of cafés, restaurants, and shops.
Cafayate is renowned primarily for its wine. The high-altitude vineyards surrounding the town specialise in, among other varieties, Torrontés—the signature white grape of Northwest Argentina.
A visit to and tasting at a local bodega comes highly recommended. During a guided tour, you will learn more about viticulture in this arid, high-altitude region.
Today, you drive from Cafayate through one of Northwest Argentina's most spectacular landscapes.
You begin with the Quebrada de las Conchas, an awe-inspiring canyon of red, orange, and yellow-hued rock formations. Along the route lie several extraordinary natural landmarks, including El Obelisco, Los Castillos, El Sapo, El Anfiteatro, and La Garganta del Diablo.
Take your time and drive at an easy pace. A new panoramic view awaits around almost every bend, and there are numerous opportunities along the way for short walks.
Afterwards, the scenery shifts once again as you drive through the verdant Lerma Valley towards Salta. Your final destination is Finca Valentina, located just outside Salta, where you can unwind delightfully after a day full of impressions.
This charming accommodation is known for its exquisite cuisine and warm hospitality. What's more, you can take part in a cooking workshop here and learn how to make traditional Argentine empanadas yourself.
Today, your journey continues to the province of Jujuy and a vibrant Andean landscape.
The first part of the route leads along the famous Camino de Yungas, a narrow paved road that winds through lush mountain scenery. The landscape is a stark and refreshing contrast to the arid valleys you have encountered in recent days.
Via San Salvador de Jujuy, the provincial capital, you drive on to the small and atmospheric village of Purmamarca.
The village sits at the foot of the spectacular Cerro de los Siete Colores, the Hill of Seven Colors. The diverse minerals within the rock strata create a truly extraordinary natural palette.
Purmamarca's historic church is well worth a visit, too. Its interior features local cardón cactus wood, easily recognised by the characteristic holes left behind where the spines once grew.
Today, you will discover the magnificent Quebrada de Humahuaca, an elongated mountain valley that ranks among the most breathtaking landscapes in Northwest Argentina and is designated a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The route leads through a geologically stunning terrain showcasing vibrant strata of colourful rock. The light shifts continuously throughout the day, creating an extraordinary palette of colours on the mountains, particularly around sunrise and sunset.
Driving to Maimará around sunset is highly recommended, offering splendid views of the colourful Paleta del Pintor—the Painter's Palette.
The villages of Tilcara and Humahuaca are also well worth exploring. Here, you will encounter enduring pre-Columbian traditions and the rich Andean culture firsthand.
Today features one of Argentina's most surreal landscapes: the vast Salinas Grandes.
From Purmamarca, you ascend via the dramatic Cuesta de Lipán. This steep, winding road takes you through ever-changing mountain terrain to high altitudes.
When the brilliant white salt flat finally appears on the horizon, it feels as though you are entering an entirely different world. The gleaming white Salinas Grandes create a striking contrast against the surrounding mountains and arid terrain.
You will explore the salt flats before returning along the same scenic route to Purmamarca.
Today, you drive back towards Salta, where you will return your rental car at the airport.
You can once again opt for the picturesque Ruta 9 via the Camino de Yungas, or take the faster highway route past San Salvador de Jujuy. If your flight departs around midday, we advise taking the highway to ensure ample time for returning your vehicle.
Upon arrival in Puerto Iguazú, you will be transferred to your hotel.
Nestled in the far northeast of Argentina amidst lush subtropical surroundings, Puerto Iguazú serves as the ideal gateway for visiting the world-renowned Iguazú Falls.
Depending on your arrival time, the remainder of the day is at your leisure. You could visit the Triple Frontier landmark, where Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay meet, or explore La Casa de Botellas—an intriguing family project where discarded materials are creatively repurposed into new products.
Today, you will visit one of South America's absolute highlights: the awe-inspiring Iguazú Falls.
You will be picked up from your hotel in the morning and travel to the national park on the Argentine side. Accompanied by a specialist local bilingual guide, you will discover the area's remarkable flora and fauna.
The Argentine side features various walking trails that allow you to experience the waterfalls up close. As you walk through the tropical rainforest, you also have the chance to spot wildlife such as coatis, monkeys, and toucans.
One of the most impressive vantage points is the Garganta del Diablo—the Devil's Throat. Here, an immense torrent of water plunges down with thunderous power.
Looking to experience the falls from an even closer perspective? You can embark on a thrilling boat ride that takes you right up to the roaring cascades. A truly exhilarating experience where getting soaked is guaranteed!
Today, you cross the border into Brazil to experience the Brazilian side of the Iguazú Falls.
While the Argentine side lets you get right up close and walk among the cascades, the Brazilian side provides the ultimate panoramic vantage point across the entire waterfall complex. From the walkways, you can behold hundreds of falls stretching over a distance of several kilometres.
The perspective is entirely distinct and serves as the perfect complement to your visit yesterday.
Should you wish to extend your excursion, you can also visit the nearby Parque das Aves. Located right next to the national park, this bird sanctuary is dedicated to the conservation and rehabilitation of tropical bird species.
Today is at your leisure in Puerto Iguazú.
After an enriching journey packed with nature, culture, and adventure, you can take things at your own pace. Relax by your hotel pool or set out to explore on your own.
Depending on your interests and schedule, we can recommend a selection of optional excursions. This allows you to discover more of the subtropical surroundings or simply enjoy a restful day before returning to Buenos Aires.
Today, you fly back to Buenos Aires, arriving in the late afternoon or evening depending on your flight schedule.
If you have enough time, you can take one last stroll through the city or enjoy a farewell dinner at one of Buenos Aires' excellent restaurants.
Perhaps you will choose a traditional parrilla to savor an authentic Argentine steak one last time, or opt for one of the cutting-edge restaurants for which Buenos Aires is internationally renowned.
